Getting Started

First thing's first. You may be wondering why a wiki on wikidot themes is unthemed. The answer is simple : it is this way so that you can try the examples on the page where you see them. All wikidot themes are based on the simple template you see now : the base template.

Tools

There are two tools which are extremely helpful in making themes. They are Firefox and Web Developer. Here's the short description of each and why you should use them :

Firefox

Firefox is a popular web browser. We recommend using it because it has Add-Ons which help making custom Wikidot themes easier.

You can download Firefox here : http://www.mozilla.com

Web Developer

Web Developer is a Add-On for Firefox that allows you to change the CSS of a webpage in a realtime preview. The CSS you create then can simply be copied and pasted into a Wikidot theme.

Once you have Firefox installed, go here :https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60

Using Web Developer

CSS can be edited live using the Edit CSS window of WebDeveloper.

To open the Edit CSS window of Web Developer

  • Click on the CSS pulldown menu (third option on the Web Developer toolbar)
  • Choose Edit CSS.

By default Web Developer may appear on the side of the screen. I find this awkward, so I place it at the top. If this is the case, Click on the button right next to the Edit CSS tab. This will move it around the screen, one side at a time. Keep pressing it until it appears where you want.
